Estimation of Hurricane Surge Hydrographs

Publication: Journal of the Waterways and Harbors Division
Volume 94, Issue 2

Abstract

Numerically integrated hydrodynamic equations of motion and continuity are used for computing the one-dimensional, nonlinear storm surge along the Texas Coast. This method employs the onshore and the alongshore wind stress components with a moving wind field over the continental shelf. Hurricanes Carla (1961), Audrey (1957), and the 1949 storm were used for calibration. Other storms were used to verify the method. Surge hydrographs are presented for several locations along the coast to show the effects of varying the standard project hurricane parameters.
