Abstract
An analysis is given of data pertaining to ship turn-around time at the Port of Bangkok from the standpoint of queuing theory. Ship arrivals for a full year were studied and an arrival-distribution function selected. The servicing-distribution function of the 1,215 ships which used berths during the year was obtained. The problem was to determine the average waiting time for ships arriving from sea, and the average number of ships waiting at the bar for a berth. As the formulas for multiple-channel queuing models for exponential arrival and Erlangian servicing are intractable, three approximations were studied. Two of these were found to give reasonable results when compared with the known values of waiting time and queue length. Inferences were drawn regarding the effect of expected growth of traffic on waiting times and the number of ships waiting at the bar in the future.
