Computerized Residential Refuse Districting

Abstract
Solid waste management has rapidly become one of the priority problems facing local government administrators. To assist the director of a public works or sanitation department in the timely evaluation of alternatives for providing refuse collection, a computerized model was developed to delineate compact, balanced collection districts. The model is based on a heuristic methodology first proposed by Maranzana. The methodology is modified to enable control of district size and to consider the locations of both disposal sites and vehicle garages in the formation of districts.
