Transportation and Urban Renewal—Experience in the United Kingdom
Publication: Journal of the Urban Planning and Development Division
Volume 99, Issue 1
Abstract
Urban renewal in the United Kingdom is divided between redevelopment of town centers for commercial uses and the clearance and renewal of unsatisfactory housing. The commercial renewal is, for the most part, privately financed. The housing renewal is primarily a local government operation. The large scale clearance of whole districts of the old towns and the creation of new towns offers opportunities for the development of urban transport in the context of total development. Great emphasis is now being placed on the development of public transport, on environmental issues, and on involving the general public in the decision-making process.
