Location Models: Solid Waste Collection Example

Publication: Journal of the Urban Planning and Development Division
Volume 97, Issue 1

Abstract

The paper in the Journal of Urban Planning and Development Division, by Marks, ReVelle, and Liebman, presented a review of location models for the private and public sector. The material herein deals with the application of one of these models to a particular application, the location of transfer stations for solid waste collection. Using preliminary, readily available data, the question of feasibility of building such facilities and the sensitivity of their location to changes in parameters and alternatives are investigated. The analysis indicated important areas of future investigation and added greatly to a basic knowledge of the system. A basic analysis of the management problem in solid wastes is included.
