Abstract
A seminar or semester-long course in urban planning techniques is one step toward the civil engineer’s assuming his rightful place on the planning team. This paper presents an approach to the teaching of a semester-long course on urban planning techniques at the graduate level. Emphasis is placed on the desirability of assistance from non-engineers of several disciplines and the benefits of the inclusion of a number of court cases to stimulate student interest. Five appendices present a detailed semester outline, a list of selected court cases and statutes keyed to the outline, a related set of law-library research problems on enabling legislation, a list of typical student research topics on local planning problems, and suggestions for audiovisual aids.
