New Adjustment of North American Datum
Publication: Journal of the Surveying and Mapping Division
Volume 108, Issue 2
Abstract
The new adjustment of the North American Datum will be completed in 1984. The numerical problems associated with the simultaneous solution of 500,000 unknown parameters appear to be minimal. Results of several large test adjustments using the Helmert blocking software system indicate that the adjustment can be achieved in an efficient manner. The new adjustment will be based on a geocentric datum, known as the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD 1983), which will span the entire North American continent. In addition, the National Geodetic Survey will continue to publish and support two plane coordinates in the United States: the Universal Transverse Mercator System, and the State Plane Coordinate.
