Selection of Maps for Engineering and Planning

To provide needed assistance to the map designers and users, the Committee on Cartographic Surveying of the Surveying and Mapping Division, ASCE, in 1968 began preparation of a manual on such map selection. Because of the broad scope and application of this manual, the need for input from all possible cartographic organizations was recognized. The basic outline of the manual as prepared by the Committee on Cartographic Surveying and modified by the Task Committee, is as follows: (1) purpose and scope; (2) engineering and planning functions; (3) types of maps; (4) scales and contour intervals; (5) map accuracy; (6) selecting map scale and contour interval; (7) content of a map; (8) map availability; (9) map symbols; (10) definitions of selected terms; (11) map samples; and (12) bibliography.
