Mission of U.S. Lake Survey

Abstract
The writer emphasized the significance of the U.S. Lake Survey's mission on the Great Lakes and its relationship to navigational charting, hydraulics and hydrology, international boards and committees, limnological research, data management and topographic maps. Lake Survey has also gathered large quantities of research data. In 1962, a formal research program was implemented. The program's five sections are Water Motion, Shore Processes, Water Characteristics, Water Quantity, and Ice and Snow, The Great Data Center was organized to collect, coordinate, analyze, and make available water resources data in computer intelligible form. Future plans include expansion of the research program and greater utilization of automation.
