Construction Control by Photogrammetric Methods

Publication: Journal of the Surveying and Mapping Division
Volume 95, Issue 1

Abstract

Modern photogrammetric techniques can be of tremendous assistance to the survey engineer by furnishing a network of control points with positions and elevation values for convenient survey reference. The transfer of highway design, in all of its numerous details, from the plans to the ground is the primary objective of construction surveys in rugged terrain. New instrumentation has helped considerably to raise standards and increase productivity, but the job of actually staking centerline, top of cut, toe of slope, right of way limits, structures, and a myriad of details, is a monumental task begging for innovations by any ingenious survey engineer. The Division of Highways is currently investigating the application of digital photogrammetry to this problem by both analogical and analytical methods. Initial results are highly encouraging, and indicate that reliable construction control in rugged terrain can be established by digital photogrammetric techniques.
