Mapping Standards for Urban Planning
Publication: Journal of the Surveying and Mapping Division
Volume 93, Issue 2
Abstract
Accurate and up-to-date surveys and maps are essential for community planning, but available mapping is not meeting the requirements of planners. Better coordination and integration are needed for the several different mapping efforts in urban areas. An Urban Mapping Panel was convened in 1965 to determine what uniform mapping standards could be established to ensure that maps developed under one program could be used by other programs, and what actions by the Federal government and other groups would most effectively promote the development of better mapping in urban areas throughout the country. A subcommittee on mapping requirements is collecting information from planners on map resources currently available in given areas and requirements for revision and additional mapping. Information is sought on scales, contour intervals, format, control framework, map accuracy, photography, and geodetic control for nonmapping purposes. Progress has been made toward better understanding of problems in urban mapping, but many of the problems remain unsolved.
