Residual Strength and Landslides in Clay and Shale

Abstract
Three landslides in overconsolidated clays and shales have been analyzed and the computed strengths have been compared with results of laboratory residual shear tests. Agreement between field and laboratory results is good and suggests that residual shear strength can be a valid parameter to use in determining stability of slopes. Methods by which the landslides were stabilized are described. Subsurface drainage has proved to be a simple and effective method of stabilization where there is ground water to remove, even in supposedly tight formations.
