Abstract
Three-dimensional finite element analyses were performed for dams in valleys with valley wall slopes of 1:1, 3:1, and 6:1. The results were compared with the results of two-dimensional analyses to evaluate the accuracy of two-dimensional analyses. The conclusions were: (1) plane strain analyses of the maximum transverse section provide accurate results for dams in valleys with valley wall slopes 3:1 or flatter; (2) plane stress analyses of the maximum longitudinal section do not provide accurate results; and (3) plane strain analyses of the maximum longitudinal section provide fairly accurate results for all valley wall slopes.
