Publication: Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division
Volume 98, Issue 6

Abstract

These reports appearing in the Journal are not a text on foundation engineering. Their purpose is to set forth the reasoning which guides investigations of foundations for small and moderate sized buildings. The parts are as follows: Part One provides an introduction to the subject, defines general terms, and describes the scope of the investigation; Part Two (in this issue) describes procedures and tests for foundation investigations; and Part Three describes presentation of data. Part Four describes investigations and studies associated with the construction phase. There are also two appendices. Appendix A describes the more commonly encountered soils and conditions which are especially difficult or hazardous, so that conditions requiring special consideration and competent experts may be recognized. Appendix B is a check list for making foundation investigations.
