Tilting Foundations

Publication: Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division
Volume 98, Issue 1

Abstract

The angle of tilt of foundations subjected to overturning moments were predicted based on the coefficient of subgrade reaction obtained from cyclic plate load tests. The size of the plates used for the determination of the coefficient of subgrade reaction was selected in a manner such that a foundation on an elastic half-space and on a Winkler model would show an identical angle of tilt. The effect of lateral soil support was considered in this analysis by assuming a lateral coefficient of subgrade reaction. A number of test results for foundations subjected to overturning moments show excellent agreement with the predicted values.
