Structures in Soil under High Loads

Publication: Journal of the Soil Mechanics and Foundations Division
Volume 97, Issue 3

Abstract

Basic soil-structure relations are provided for horizontal buried cylinders subjected to high loads. Also, general information is given on the status of soil-structure system optimization and analysis of such systems using finite element codes. The main contribution of the paper is a methodology for the design of backpacking over structures. Backpacking is any low modulus material placed in the fill to reduce the effective stiffness of an inclusion with respect to the stiffness of the soil. It is concluded that factors of 10 or more increase in load capacity of a buried structure can be achieved by proper use of backpacking.
