Abstract
About 71% of the earth's surface is covered by the oceans and 29% by land. The sediments that cover the floor of this vast ocean area have recently become the subject of marine geology and soil mechanics studies. From the early days of crude oceanic soundings in the 1840's to the present day of sophisticated deep submersible vehicles, marine technology has seen remarkable advances.
