Abstract
A loading procedure for triaxial testing of soils which incorporates the advantages of both the stress-control (incremental loading) and constant rate-of-strain types of test is described. The technique entails using stress control until the peak deviator stress is approached, then converting the test to strain-rate control. A convenient and reliable apparatus for performing this test is described and test results are compared for the three types of tests.
