Comparison of Footing Vibration Tests with Theory

Abstract
Theoretical solutions treating footings resting on an elastic semi-infinite body were compared with test results recently published by WES. The test footings were from 5 ft to 16 ft in diam and were excited into the vertical, torsional, and rocking modes of vibration. It was found that the theories gave good estimates of the amplitudes of motion when the vertical oscillation produced a linear acceleration of the footing of less than about 1/2 g and when the rotational oscillations were less than about 0.1 mil. These motions cover the normal range of machine vibrations. Because the theoretical solutions based on the elastic semi-infinite body can be interpreted in terms of a lumped mass, spring, and dashpot system, the latter system may also be used for predicting footing motions.
