Abstract
Results of a study, in which field measurements of moisture, movement, and swelling pressure variations underneath a concrete canal lining in expansive clay were made, are presented. In a theoretical analysis of the mechanism and mode of failure, it is suggested that rupture of the concrete plates may be explained by bending caused by eccentricity of compressive forces originating from swelling pressures exerted on the structure In both horizontal and vertical directions. A reasonable correlation was obtained between the field measurements and the theoretical approach, making possible a quantitative analysis of an actual failure that occurred.
