Abstract
Comparisons between the displacement experienced by 1/5 scale models and prototypes for a series of drop tests under controlled conditions and a series of artillery foundation tests in the field demonstrate the importance of modeling soil layering and compaction in granular soils. Only by simulating soil compaction does correlation occur in sand and remolded clays. Replica model and prototype results relate reasonably to preconsolidated clays.
