Abstract

A review is presented of major developments influencing the conduct in engineering practice, of settlement analyses for buildings on saturated clays. Beginning with Terzaghi's theory of consolidation, the significant guidelines to this study are delineated. Within this framework, contributions to the ASCE Conference on Design of Foundations for Control of Settlement are examined. Even in this barest outline a number of controversial issues can be noted. A great need exists for field data and research investigations on the settlement of foundations on sands and partially saturated clays.
