Abstract
The origin of the various types of electrical charges carried by soil colloids are described and the influence of different species of exchangeable cations on the forces arising from the electrical fields due to these charges is discussed in terms of the theory of the diffuse double layer. The principles of the application of this theory to the study of floculation and swelling phenomena are described and examples are given to illustrate the way in which it may be used to predict the effects of different types of exchangeable cation and salt concentration on the mechanical properties of soils.
