Abstract
Oxygen use in the Red Deer River is compared to stream loading. The drop in dissolved oxygen levels below the City of Red Deer is related to the change in biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and to the change in total organic carbon (TOC) in a 50-mile (80 km) stretch of river. The oxygen used in the river approximates 2.7 times the drop in BOD -5-20 and is approximately equal to the drop in TOC. A rate constant for dissolved oxygen use in the river is comnputed as 1.0 per day (natural log). Some 95% of oxygen depletion occurs in 40 miles (65 km) of river.
