Abstract
A method of chlorinating water for disinfecting purposes is described. It uses a fixed bed of a resin, or polymeric material, that releases chlorine to the water passing through the bed. There are many different resins that may be used in this area, but all have primary or secondary amine or amide groups. The rate of release of chlorine was shown to be related to the chlorine demand in the water. Experiments showed a residual chlorine after 60,000 gal. (U.S.) per cu ft of resin with chlorine demands varying from 0 mg per 1 to 20 mg per 1. Several possible systems using the chlorine exchange resins are outlined.
