Abstract
The effects of shearing on the aggregation and breakup of aggregates of activated sludge particles were investigated by studying the settling characteristics of the sludge after the suspension was sheared at a uniform rate. For the activated sludge studied an optimum shearing rate of 15 per sec was found to enhance significantly the aggregation of sludge particles and their separation by settling from the suspending water.
