Monte Carlo Simulation of Industrial Waste Discharge
Publication: Journal of the Sanitary Engineering Division
Volume 95, Issue 5
Abstract
The concepts of Monte Carlo simulation, in conjunction with relevant concepts from probability and statistics, are presented by illustrating their application to an industrial waste peak load smoothing problem. A tanning operation consisting of eight batch processes and two continuous flow processes, has been simulated. The formulation of all input data and assumptions has been described in detail and the logic involved in programming the simulation has been explained. The simulator has been used to examine the possibility of smoothing peak loads, in terms of both flow and organic load, by altering the schedule of waste liquors from the various batch tanning processes. Extensions of simulation byond the limited scope of this study have been suggested by posing several typical and important questions which can be answered using the concepts explained herein. The basic concepts have been presented in simple and general terms to facilitate and encourage the use of simulation in other industrial waste problem situations.
