Iron-59 as Solids Tracer Aqueous Suspensions

Publication: Journal of the Sanitary Engineering Division
Volume 94, Issue 6

Abstract

A radioactive tracer is introduced for following the movement of particulate matter in sewage treatment processes. By combining this radio-tracer with dye tracers, the hydraulic characteristics of several aeration tanks and final clarifiers were investigated. Particulate matter was found to travel through a sewage suspension faster than the liquid portion. Some center-feed radial flow type final clarifiers indicate appreciable short circuiting of mixed liquor to the return sludge outlet. Investigations of some aeration tanks designed for plug flow indicated that hydraulic conditions ranged from near plug flow to those approaching complete mixing.
