Abstract
The solid wastes problem is a health problem requiring engineering solutions. It needs new knowledge from research, but even more it needs penetrating engineering analysis and perceptive engineering innovation. Progress since enactment of the Solid Waste Disposal Act of 1965 includes initiation of 42 Research Grant projects along with arrangements for construction of the Nation's first field laboratory for general research on solid wastes pollution abatement. Other action areas described include Training Grants at eight universities, the beginning 50 Demonstration projects of new or improved methods or associated Study and Investigations, and the initiation of grant-supported planning programs in 32 states. The engineering profession is challenged to apply imagination and engineering innovation to help solve the solid wastes problem. The Demonstration Grant mechanism provided through the Act is pointed out as a useful tool for this purpose.
