Abstract

The polluting effects of highways on the environment are generally discussed. Erosion of soil exposed during construction results in substantial sedimentation damage downstream from the construction area. Sediment loads and damages are described for localized conditions in Maryland and Virginia. Provisions for controlling the pollution effects of highway construction are being required by Federal and local governments. The use of chemicals in highway maintenance and spillage in the transportation of chemicals also have damaging effects on the environment. A center for reporting of highway accidents involving spillage of hazardous commodities should be established. Roadside litter requires stronger action than presently enforced penalties.
