Abstract
Production of animals for slaughter has become an industry involving large-scale enterprises covering many areas and including thousands of animals. The impact of the wastes from such operations is only beginning to be realized and will be magnified in the future. Information is presented on the magnitude of the problem, on the pollution potential associated with the problem, and on the characteristics of the wastes from such operations. Potential anaerobic and aerobic treatment systems are explored. Data are presented from laboratory systems, and a treatment system is discussed.
