Abstract
Mechanisms for the causation of the plateau in diphasic oxygen uptake were investigated. Studies were conducted in the Warburg apparatus and the BOD bottle, using heterogeneous populations of sewage origin and pure cultures. A shift in predominance from bacteria to protozoa was found to cause both the occurrence of the plateau and the second stage of oxygen uptake in low as well as high substrate concentrations. The protozoa were found to have a direct and autonomous function in the exertion of biochemical oxygen demand. This finding contradicts and expands concepts previously held in the field concerning the role of protozoa in BOD exertion.
