Nuclear Power in the Antarctic Environment
Publication: Journal of the Sanitary Engineering Division
Volume 89, Issue 4
Abstract
The introduction of nuclear power to the Antarctic continent has required and will continue to require careful assessment of the relative effects of both the plant and the environment. Environmental criteria are given, and their effect on plant design relative to radiological monitoring, secondary shielding, and radioactive waste disposal are examined for the PM-3A at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, a coastal station founded on permafrost. An investigation is included of considerations applicable to an inland station located on the Antarctic ice cap.
