Bolted Splice Connections with Undeveloped Fillers

Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 108, Issue 12

Abstract

The use of undeveloped filler plates has a definite influence on the loading and deformation behavior of bolted splice joints. Two replicate tests were completed on each of five different filler plate assemblages. Bolted splice joints were tested with fillers ranging from 0-0.75 in. (0-19.05 mm) in thickness. Single-ply and multi-ply fillers were used. Deformations, slip loads, and ultimate loads were studied for the filler combinations. Increasing the thickness of undeveloped fillers causes a significant increase in the deformation at maximum load but only a slight decrease in ultimate load. Comparison of test results to the AASHTO and AISC specifications are made along with recommendations for design.
