Abstract
The problem of determining the three dimensional equilibrium shape of an arbitrarily loaded cable is a classical one in nonlinear structural mechanics. This note presents a new technique, based on an exact representation of cable compliance combined with a Newton-Raphson interation, for solving this problem. As shown by example, this new technique provides convergence to equilibrium far more rapidly than other commonly used methods.
