Abstract
The bond action between concrete and deformed bars in lap splices is analysed in its different working stages. The principal tensile stress generated by bond stress cracks the concrete after which bond gives rise to splitting forces. These forces cause longitudinal cracking of the cover. A method for determination of this cracking load is proposed. The stress distribution along the lap length is analysed with modulus of displacement theory for different bond stages. The final bond failure by splitting of the cover according to minimum stressed failure pattern is analysed. The effect of confining reinforcement is discussed. Methods for calculation of bond resistance in lap splices are proposed and compared with tests.
