Abstract
Beams and one-way slabs can be proportioned on the basis of approximate analysis coefficients currently listed in Section 8.3.3 of the American Concrete Institute (ACI) Building Code (1). Although the coefficients have been used for more than 40 yr, their scope is severly limited and they generally lead to wasteful proportions of reinforcement in flexure.
