Single-Angle Welded-Bolted Connections
Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 103, Issue 3
Abstract
Full-scale load tests, using combined shear and moment with rotation, of welded-bolted single-angle steel beam connections describe their behavior up to failure for 2-bolts-6-bolts, inclusive. Larger connections, up to 12-bolts in size, have been loaded to the capacity of available equipment but did not fail. In all cases, both the welds and bolts can carry CISC and CSA allowable design loads with factors of safety well in excess of those required by these codes. Curves are fitted to the observed data to predict the moment developed by the bolts for the full range of tested connections, both at maximum rotation and at the design loads. The observed rotation of the end of the connected beam takes place by slip of the beam with respect to the angle, rather than by the deformation of the angle itself.
