Abstract
The ultimate strength of continuous-span composite concrete slab-steel girder bridges was analyzed by the virtual work method of the yield line theory to determine the ultimate moment capacity required, when the members are subjected to the ultimate loading. The ultimate loading consists of a uniform dead load and concentrated wheel loads which are increased by load factors. A computer program was developed to maximize the ultimate moment function with respect to the collapse pattern variable. The computer program can also be modified for use as a design tool. In addition, design equations were developed from the parametric studies to determine the ultimate slab moment and ultimate composite section moment. A design comparison with the work stress method is also presented.
