Abstract
Although it is essential to ensure that unbraced multistory steel frames are stable under fully factored gravity loads alone, only few techniques are available for analyzing them under these ultimate conditions. This paper presents one such method using the concept that frame instability occurs when one story becomes unstable. The effects of plastic hinge formation are considered, and the mechanisms which can lead to instability are described. The proposed technique has been successfully compared with experimental results and a more sophisticated approach.
