Fracture Sensitivity of Dynamically Loaded Girders

Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 101, Issue 12

Abstract

The effect of dynamic traffic loads on the brittleness of steel highway bridge girders is found to be considerable if fracture initiation is taken as the criterion of brittleness. The effect on propagation of these fractures is less dramatic. A universal beam section was used for the experiment. It was found that a strain rate increase from 30 × 10−6s−1 to 30 × 10−3s−1 caused a shift of25°C (45°F) in the highest temperature for fracture initiation, while the highest temperature for complete fracture at certain strain levels was shifted by only 10°C (18°F).
