Experience with Computer-Aided Drafting System
Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 101, Issue 4
Abstract
The paper describes in general terms a system for mechanizing the production of detail drawings and schedules for reinforced concrete building structures, using a digitizer, a visual display unit, and an incremental plotter. Information is given for estimating the cost of a typical example of actual production work. It is possible to introduce a considerable degree of mechanization into the production of detailed drawings of buildings, and the costs can compare favorably with those of manual methods of drawing production. There are particular advantages when the production of a drawing is linked with the compilation of a schedule of components, such as the detailing of concrete reinforcement, and also when details prepared for one set of detail drawings can be used as the basis of subsequent sets of details - for instance when the concrete outline is used as the basis of the layouts of the nonstructural walls and partitions.
