Abstract
The shear capacity of the longitudinal reinforcement in concrete beams acting as a dowel across a diagonal tension crack is analyzed, based upon the concept of a beam on an elastic foundation. Axial tension in the dowel, action of the stirrups and progressive horizontal cracking of the cover are included in the analysis. Results for specific examples are presented as interaction diagrams between dowel shear capacity and dowel axial tension.
