Abstract
Continuous crane rails with welded splices are being used in industry to improve crane performance and to reduce maintenance costs associated with splice and rail clamp details. Rail lengths exceeding 1,000 ft are not uncommon. It is shown that continuous crane rails require only lateral restraint in order to maintain rail alignment. Vertical restraint is not required because vertical buckling of continuous crane rails due to axial force in the rail is nearly impossible. Some examples are provided to illustrate the results of the analysis.
