Man-Oriented Program System for Engineering Design

Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 97, Issue 1

Abstract

Any computerized design system must be oriented toward man as its source of innovation and growth. Programs and systems for engineering design should be made by the engineers who will be actively involved in their use. Direct access, real-time systems, such as time sharing, have made this practical. Design engineers have developed a working system for the design of large, vertical, pressure vessels. Within the system the engineer makes the key decisions and determines the design process through on-line interaction. The system consists of several component programs and storage files. Its objective is to involve the engineer in the creative part of the design process by providing him with extensions of his analytical capabilities and his memory. The system is open-ended, dynamically adaptive and is aimed to enhance the communication between engineering specialties. Brief examples of use are presented and probable future course of development is outlined.
