Abstract
Destructive tests on prototype reinforced concrete slabs designed by Johansen's yield-line method, Hillerborg's strip method, and the elastic design method are described. The yield and failure characteristics of these slabs are then compared with those obtained from slabs designed by three optimum lower-bound approaches. For two of the optimum slabs, savings are obtained of 37% and 16% in the reinforcement volume required in the Johansen and Hillerborg slabs, respectively. All slabs are square, simply supported, and uniformly loaded.
