Abstract

Two governing equations for out-of-plane flexural-torsional buckling of curved planar rods are derived. The equations are used to obtain lateral-torsional bucking loads and mode shapes of ring segments subjected to thrust or pull directed along the chord. The buckled shape for pull loads is antisymmetrical about the center of the ring segment while for thrust loads the buckled shape is symmetrical. The torsional stiffness of the ring's cross section strongly influences pull buckling loads but it has a negligible effect on thrust buckling.
