Grain Storage Structures for Food Deficient Areas
Publication: Journal of the Structural Division
Volume 95, Issue 10
Abstract
Proposed low-cost bulk grain storage structures and their design criteria and construction features are presented. Criteria for safe storage of grain and their effect on the design of storage structures are outlined. Grain storage facilities are subdivided into granaries and country elevators. Typical designs are shown and their special features presented. Granaries or flat storage structures are intended for long-term storage of large harvest surpluses to provide for years of smaller yields. Country elevators or upright bins serve as collection centers for farmer's grain and are used for short-term storage. Typical designs of timber, concrete, and steel are intended to save time and effort in planning the most economical storage arrangement. Structures are chosen for their suitability to low-cost labor areas commonly found in countries with developing modern economies.
