Abstract

A design procedure for circular underground flexible conduits is presented. The method is based on the formation of a collapse mechanism in contrast to the deflection criterion which is widely used at present. In order to locate the points of maximum bending moment, the loading conditions assumed by Spangler are used, with some modification, and the structure is analyzed elastically. Plastic hinges are assumed at these points and the thickness required to maintain equilibrium is calculated.
