Abstract

A finite-element method of analysis is presented for skewed composite beam bridges with diaphragms. The structure is divided into plate and eccentric stiffener elements for which stiffness matrices are derived. These stiffness matrices for the component elements are assembled into a total stiffness matrix for the structure. Solution of the resulting equilibrium equations gives nodal deformations of the structure which can be used to obtain internal forces. The method is compared with several existing methods of analysis for this type of structure. A typical bridge structure is analyzed to illustrate its behavior and the effects of adding diaphragms or skewing the structure.
